Harry Malcolm Chalfant

1869 June 25–1932 November 10

Harry Chalfant was born in Washington County in western Pennsylvania. In 1893, at age 23, he was ordained a Methodist Episcopal minister.

Rev. Chalfant's calling was temperance and prohibition. In 1909 he became editor of the Keystone Citizen, which the following year became the Pennsylvania edition of The American Issue, a national publication of the Anti-Saloon League; he retained the position until the year of his death. The Chalfant family moved to Narberth in 1914.

To celebrate the 1919 ratification of the 18th amendment, which outlawed the consumption of alcoholic beverages, Chalfant wrote Father Penn and John Barleycorn, "the history of the rise and fall of the liquor trade".
