The land that is now Shirley Road in the nineteenth century passed through several members of the Young family; the first, David, was proprietor of the General Wayne Inn. By 1908, it was acquired by Augustus J. Loos, whose son Paul Loos, and son-in-law Walter Dothard (Loos & Dothard) constructed its first houses 1915–16.
The Loos family maintained their large house at 417 Haverford Ave., on the west side of Shirley Road, until the 1970s. Its former stable became 108 Shirley Road.
