Opened to connect to the 1879 tunnel under the railroad. The new road followed existing property lines west from the Philadelphia city line.
In 1895, it demarcated the boundary between Narberth Borough and Lower Merion Township. As the Shortridge estate was being developed in 1947, the road's sharp curve near the tunnel was flattened, stranding a ¼-acre sliver of Lower Merion on the Narberth side of the road.
